Canelo Alvarez Vs. Gennady Golovkin III: The Path To Pound-For-Pound Supremacy

Canelo Alvarez is on the cusp of becoming the sport’s pound-for-pound champion. After wins over Gennady Golovkin and Rocky Fielding in 2018, Alvarez is back on track after the validity of his achievements were tarnished by a failed test for a banned substance.

Canelo seems to have put those issues behind him. With his September victory over Golovkin and a life-changing deal with DAZN, Canelo is the biggest draw in the sport. What will 2019 hold for the WBA (Super), WBC middleweight and the WBA (Regular) super middleweight champion?

Talks are reportedly underway for a third fight between Canelo and Golovkin. While it’s not the fight that I’d most like to see Canelo have next, it appears that could be the case as Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has targeted May 4.

That date puts Canelo in a position for a Cinco De Mayo weekend bout, which is what was originally on tap for 2018 before things went awry. If Canelo is going to face Golovkin for the third time, and he’s going to distance himself from the likes of Terence Crawford, Mikey Garcia, Errol Spence Jr., and Anthony Joshua, he needs to follow-up by adding two more titles. Mind you; this path would not be an easy one.

If Canelo wants to upgrade his 168-pound title from regular to super, he could challenge the man who holds the true WBA world title, Callum Smith. Matchroom Boxing recently signed Smith to a promotional deal.
